As always, the show will feature over 35 singers performing the songs of the great Irish rockers -- U2, Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy, The Undertones, SLF, Sinead O'Connor, The Pogues, Elvis Costello, Dexy's, Rory Gallagher, BoomTown Rats, and many more.(Including a few traditional Irish gems as well). The festivities begin with a set from Joe Hurley, before his band returns to the stage to back up NYC's (and beyond) best vocalists for the Irish-Rock-Revue. A full list of performers for this show will be posted here in the next week. In the meantime, read about previous Revues on the Irish-Rock-Revue PRESS page. Some of last year's surprise(ie Unannounced) performers included Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello, Republic of Loose from Dublin, legendary Rock producer(Thin Lizzy, BT Rats) Tony Visconti, and Laura Cantrell.
This year, there will only be ONE PERFORMANCE of what the IRISH VOICE called " The biggest Party in town. You haven't celebrated St Patrick's in New York until you've been to the All-Star-Irish-Rock Revue!!"
Look for video clips of some of last year's performances on the website soon.
Congratulations to Mr Colum McCann are in serious order today. Joe's good pal (who directed the film "Beautiful Kid" which featured some of Joe's tunes and starred Frank McCourt) is a best-selling novelist and all-around great guy,(who may well have a lyrical co-write with Joe on the upcoming CD), and today he was nominated for an Oscar! He wrote the screenplay based on his short story "Everything In This Country Must" which was made into a film that has been nominated for "Best Short Film" at this year's Oscars. Colum also hosted The Literary Jam which kicked off last year's Irish-Rock-Revue to great success. Well, not Hollywood success. We wish him all the best at the Awards Ceremony -- If he wins , he promises to bring the Oscar with him to Knit Fact on Sat, March 12th. On a sadder note, it has been revealed that Colum is a life-long Stoke City supporter. Oh dear.
In December, Joe performed at Glen Burtnik's Annual Charity Event, the Xmas Xtravaganza, which this year was held at the New Brunswick State Theatre to a sell-out crowd of 2,000. (The show used to be held at BB Kings in NYC and at the now-closed Bottom Line before that) With a crack backing band (Featuring Gents member Tony Shanahan of Patti Smith ) and performers that included Marshall Crenshaw, Lenny Kaye, Joy Askew, Mary Lee Kortes, and Willie Nile, it was an incredible, heart-warming evening of songs, comedy, and even fake snow falling from the ceiling.
The monthly magazine "Upstage" enjoyed Joe's rendition of his love-on-the-Bowey Xmas tale "Amsterdam Mistress". The Jan edition has a review, where the critic wrote...
"Joe Hurley, who has one of the best sets of pipes that you'll ever hear, performed "Amsterdam Mistress" with Pat Robinson on accordion and Tony Shanahan on bass. If you're a fan of Irish songwriting, you'll find yourself searching the Internet (as I did) to find out how you can get a copy of this song." -- Upstage Jan '05
The PHOTO section of the Band's website has been updated somewhat and now includes captions when you click on the thumbnail pictures.
Throughout the year, the band will be posting MP3s on the site for your free listening pleasure. Next week, Joe's version of Johnny Cash's "Why me Lord", live on WFUV, will be up and running. As will his take on Bacharach's "Walk on by" recorded live with The Kustard Kings at Fez, NYC.
Finally, the band are now opening themselves up to the world of "Living Room Concerts". Write to them if you're interested in a private show (either acoustic or electric) at your house, apt, etc. They've done a few of these and they're always cool, intimate performances, a lot of fun for everyone. The host (that's you!) book them to perform, and invites the audience to their home, where they're regaled with tunes stretching from Rogue's March to The Gents to special requests,- Pretty much anything goes. Write to bookings@roguesmarch.com
Happy New Year to you all.
RIP Adrian Lewis - We will miss you.

JUNE 2003
Joe and the band just spent a few days at the Lake Placid Film Festival where they performed at the opening and closing parties at the NorthWoods Inn. They were asked to come up and perform as a tie-in with the screening of 'Beautiful Kid' which features Joe's songs on the soundtrack. The movie, directed by Colum McCann(most recent novel is 'Dancer') and Michael Carty, is a raw, unflinching look at an Irish-American family in the Bronx, and boasts incredibly detailed performances from the young talents John Carty and Christine Meyers, as well as strong showings from Frank and Malachy McCourt. The 'buzz' film of the Festival was completely sold out(Jennifer Jason Leigh couldnt get in!) with people camped out on the floor, in stairwells etc...Following the screening, the band (w/Chris Flynn, Sean Seymour, Marni Rice, and John Shea sitting in on drums)played for a packed crowd at the NorthWoods. While Pulitzer Prize winners McCourt and William Kennedy('Ironweed') watched the show with novelist Russel Banks('The Sweet Hereafter' 'Affliction'), the band tore through a raucous set that lasted til 2:30 am, occasionally being joined onstage by special guests including Savannah Film Fest's Harvey Ray(on the soprano for 'Madcap Tears')and Beautiful Kid's producer Patrick McCullough on drunken tambourine...Lake-not-so-placid indeed...
In other news....The almost-weekly-almost-acoustic gatherings at Marty O'Briens have been attracting lots of guest musicians as well as being an informal gig for trying out brand new material...Most Fridays the guys are there with guests include former Rogue Chris Nappi, Guitarist Ivan Julian, accordionist Marni Rice, fiddler Greg Holt, percussionist John Shea, etc...Shows are free, you can smoke, and you can drink...
The St Pat's shows were all sellouts this year again-Mercury Lounge gig was the 4th Annual, and the best-ever, with no one leaving til the last song('God save the Queen')was finished around 2am...All the guest singers were superb and special thanks go out to Terry Dunne(surprise appearance from the legendary owner of Tramps), Daniel Rey,(Ramones producer who filled in at the last minute on 'Suspect device'-incendiary!) and Rachel Loshak who came in with a jaw-dropping version of 'The Sally Gardens' ...Jon Spurney, Mastro,Tish and Snooky, Chris Flynn, Sean Seymour, Christian Cassan, Claudia Chopek, Kenny Margolis, all were magnificent through the night...And a big cheers to Ed Rogers for again co-hosting the night with Joe....The shows at Connollys were a surreal blur...pure, brilliant chaos....
The Puck Fair readings at noon on St Pat's day itself were stellar-Pete Hamill, Colum McCann, Tom Kelly and many others read while Joe and Sean performed 'Valentine Blue' and 'Rockaway'...
There's a great documentary making the rounds(PBS etc)called 'Not For Sale', focusing on the East Village's gentrification, and the film largely takes place at 219 E7th st, Joe's old apt building...Really worth seeing...go to yaelbittan.com for info....
The band are gearing up to record a new cd this summer.....Cheers all...
FEB 20 2003

Fri March 14th , the Mercury Lounge, is the date and venue for the 4th Annual All-Star-Irish-Rock-Revue where over 25 of NYC's top singers will perform the best of Paddy r&r (U2,Pogues,Waterboys,Thin Lizzy,Van,Sinead,Undertones,Declan MacManus,Dexy's, Gallagher Bros(?!),SLF,etc-...This event has fast become the biggest St Pat's party in town-The night is hosted by Joe Hurley and The Gents(Joe's 'other' band)who perform a full set of their material including new songs like 'Irish breakfast in a Greek Diner', 'Never let go of my hand' as well as loads of classic Rogue's March faves. The band then take a short break before returning to the stage to back up the singers in the Revue before returning to the bar to back up their whiskeys with beer. A well-planned evening indeed.....The Gents feature such luminaries as James Mastro(Chaser producer)on guitar , Kenny Margolis(Cracker) on accordion, Tony Shanahan(patti smith), Sean Seymour, Chris Flynn, Christian Cassan, Claudia Chopek(fiddle) and the Catholic schoolgirl garbed sisters Tish and Snooky on illicit sex and back vox....A near-complete listing of the Revue singers will be posted early next week. As always, Guinness are the sponsors, so you wont go home emptyhanded(free shirts, silly hats, stolen pint glasses, etc)You can read a review of last year's show on the site ...also this year's show should be even more incredible cos the band are adding all kinds of new tunes to the Revue, as well as blooding some bloody new singers and bloody good they are too....TIX ARE ON SALE NOW and this show is a sellout every year so go to the Mercury Box Office 12-7 daily or to ticketweb.com to ensure you get in.
Colum McCann, the Irish novelist currently enjoying bestseller status with his new 'Dancer',(he sang 'fall from grace'at last years revue!)has included several of Joe's songs on the soundtrack to his new film 'Away Day' starring none other than 'Angela's Ashes' author Frank McCourt-The film is scheduled for a fall 2003 release. Lots more news to come very soon, thanks for your continued support of the band. Be in touch shortly, Cheers, Jeff Sheehy (RM webmaster)
